Oracle continues to focus on providing customers with new and improved features for its products. Talking about PeopleSoft technology, customers already on or upgrading to PS9.2 applications, sooner or later, are to experience administrative as well as strategic paradigm shifts. Key focus areas here have been Oracle’s approach of continuous delivery model and PeopleSoft Fluid.
MIDHEUG 2016 and UMRUG 2016 were held this fall in Waukesha, WI and Minneapolis, MN respectively, and were well-attended conferences that hosted interesting concurrent-track PeopleSoft sessions by Oracle, partners and customers. Key technological advancements, roadmaps and customer experiences were shared during talks, round tables, panels, discussions and were found to be very informative by the attendees.
Some of the PeopleSoft session highlights are as follows:
On Selective Adoption and PUM
The continuous delivery model means that both business users and IT need to team up, choose and deploy the newer features, patches, fixes and updates well in accordance with the business. It also implies that the associated tools and technology come designed to simplify the process. MIDHEUG had few presentations that showcased learnings and know-hows by customers such as the UW schools, based on their PUM application experiences. They talked about how they identified and addressed challenges (including those in coming up with implementation methodology) specific to their businesses. Astute Business Solutions, a UMRUG Sponsor, presented a session titled ‘Implementing Selective Adoption Strategy to take advantage of Fluid UI’. This was attended by all UMRUG participants and the response to this session was extremely enthusiastic, mainly due to the live demos and thought provoking use cases discussed for Fluid UI and Cloud. It was evident that these areas are top of mind for UMRUG users and it is essential to understand and leverage the selective adoption model the best possible way. There were other great sessions on Continuous Delivery Model and PeopleSoft’s Modern User Experience and Lifecycle Management as well.
Talk by Oracle on ‘PeopleTools Lifecycle Management’ at both conferences, was very informative and gave lot of useful insights to the attendees on various life cycle management aspects and related tools. Here, Scott Hirni detailed out PUM to a good extent and also highlighted the usefulness of PeopleTool’s PeopleSoft Test Framework (PTF) in this context.
Adopting and adapting to the continuous delivery and selective adoption model, is probably the new convention and it is positively the way to go forward for PeopleSoft users. One of the takeaways in Scott’s session was that PTF could play a vital role in helping customers keep up with PUM. Scott also described in detail the support dates for PUM and PeopleTools and the current dates of support for various releases.
On Fluid Path
Oracle continued to demonstrate its commitment to its continued investment in Fluid UI. So far, few early Fluid adopters might have had mixed experiences working with it. As noted in one of the round table discussions at UMRUG this year, some customers find it difficult to accept the new navigation paradigm that Oracle delivers in Fluid UI, while some others find it easy to adopt and realize the business benefits of Fluid UI where deployed. We expect to see mixed reactions for some more time on Fluid UI but with the planned release of PeopleTools 8.56, we also expect that to change and predict a faster rate of Fluid UI Adoption.
The (good) news is that newer PUM images continue to deliver a steady stream of new Fluid features. Some highlights are Fluid Billing Workcenter for FSCM in PUM 20, Asset Tracking enhancements in FSCM PUM 21, Page Composer for PeopleSoft Fluid Approvals, Employee Snapshot and Fluid Candidate Gateway enhancements introduced in HCM PUM 19. There are customers already on 9.2 applications, planning on deploying newer Fluid features through the latest PUM images and are positive towards the new Fluid UI experience, while others are catching up by learning how to adopt Fluid to best suit their organization needs. On Cloud and PeopleSoft
Attendees in both conferences had the opportunity to go for sessions on Cloud. Presentations on topics such as Student Cloud, Expectations when moving to Cloud, Campus Readiness for Oracle Student Cloud, Oracle’s Taleo Cloud Service were amongst other such, in the MIDHEUG conference. The keynote presented at UMRUG by Dan Stern from Oracle was a great talk, with emphasis on Oracle cloud (PaaS and IaaS with respect to PeopleSoft) and security. One of the session speakers also spoke about Deploying PeopleSoft on Cloud with a brief demo. This was very useful. Outside of PeopleSoft, there were great sessions on JDE on Cloud as well.
The panel discussion titled ‘Cloud Adoption’ had some good points presented by Cardinal Glass, Medtronic and Astute. Medtronic had recently moved from PeopleSoft to Workday Cloud while Cardinal Glass had on-premise JD Edwards integrated with Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) in the Cloud. Astute has deployed its PeopleSoft development test and sandbox instances on Amazon Cloud and is planning to move those to Oracle Cloud soon. Astute also announced that it launched a new offering for PeopleSoft Hosting on Oracle Cloud.
There is definitely a lot to learn about Cloud SaaS applications, Managed Cloud (Private and Public), Cloud Integration and Management. Organizations should focus on venturing into these new areas and follow it up implementation plans.
On PeopleSoft Roadmaps
Some of the useful roadmap sessions by Oracle, especially in MIDHEUG, were on PeopleSoft Financials and HCM Update by Liliana Lanhaus, Student Cloud by Susan Beidler and PeopleTools 8.55 by Scott Hirni.
Few of the topics discussed during PeopleTools 8.55 roadmap session (that I attended) included, Database and Browser certifications, PeopleSoft Search (read Elastic Search), Fluid, Simplified Analytics and Health Center. There was also special emphasis to delve into PeopleSoft Test Framework and Usage Monitor in the next release of PeopleTools i.e. 8.56.
